Purple Mullein (Verbascum phoeniceum mix) 40 seeds (#1095)

Stately spires in a lovely colour range
A delightful addition to perennial borders, with slim stately spires in a range of subtle colours, above rosettes of deep green leaves.
Relatively unknown by gardeners, the Mullein is a worthwhile perennial, especially for hot sunny sites. Plants form a low, ground-hugging rosette of crinkly green leaves, bearing upright stems or spikes of flowers in a range of soft pastel colours, from white through pink to rose and purple. Stems are tall and excellent for cutting. Although not a long-lived perennial, these usually self-sow.
Most effective when planted in groups towards the middle of the border. Also interesting in tubs or mixed containers.
Its favorite locations are dry, stony hillsides and open woodland areas. It adapts well to informal cottage gardens, gravel beds and rock gardens. Do not plant purple mullein in wet areas around ponds, streams or runoff areas.
The leaf rosettes stay evergreen in mild winters, but cold weather will kill the leaves to the ground. The roots can survive temperatures down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. During the summer while blooming, purple mullein enjoys the warmth of full sun exposure. It will tolerate light shade, but will not flower as much in limited sunlight.
Soil composition is important to purple mullein plants, which grow best when planted in the ground and not in containers. Provide well-drained soil that stays on the dry side, since purple mullein does not survive wet roots. Do not plant purple mullein in fertile soil. Too much fertility causes the mullein to grow too quickly to develop a strong stem. The weak stems flop over, cutting the flowering season short. This is a plant for poor soil conditions where other plants have trouble surviving. This biennial plant prefers a slightly alkaline to neutral soil pH.
