Annual plant, which grows up to 75 cm tall, with large, double orange flowers. These last well as cut flowers and are wonderful in summer gardens. Very loved by butterflies.
Erected, branched stems are thick and stiff but very brittle.
It requires warm places and sufficiently moist soil.
Removal of the first flower buds results in better branching stems and abundant flowering.

Sow from indoors from March to April in pots or trays of moist seed compost or directly in to the prepared seed bed outside after the last frost (till end of May).
Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or warm place, and keep at a constant temperature of between +15-+20C.
After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 7-14 days.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7 cm pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 25 cm apart.
