An annual plant if grown in garden and evergreen perennial if grown as a houseplant.
This small evergreen shrub has simple leaves and showy scarlet fruits. Native to eastern South America, it naturally inhabits open forested areas.
Grows up to 20-25 cm tall forming nice small shrub. Flowers are small white.
The decorative value gives the cherry-sized fruits, initially green, then red, appearing in summer and autumn (it's berries are pretty but inedible and quite toxic, so this is not a plant to keep around small children or mammalian pets that might want to nibble them). Indoors the plant will live up to 10 years and will start to produce fruit in second or third year.
Grows well in fertile, moist soil. Fertilize often. Give lots of light.
