Magnolia Vine (Schisandra Chinensis) 20 seeds (#233)

Schisandra chinensis is a deciduous Climber growing at a medium rate.
It is hardy to zone 4 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from Apr to May, and the seeds ripen from Aug to October.
The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required)The plant is not self-fertile.
Prefers a rich well-drained moisture retentive soil. Prefers a slightly acid soil but tolerates some alkalinity if plenty of organic matter is added to the soil. Requires some protection from the most intense sunlight. Plants succeed in quite deep shade and are suitable for north-facing walls. Plants are intolerant of drought. The fully dormant plant is hardy to about -17°c, though the young growth in spring can be damaged by late frosts. Plants climb by twining around supports. Any pruning is best carried out in the spring. The flowers are sweetly scented. The leaves are also aromatic. Male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Soak the seeds in a bowl of room temperature for 24 hours.
2. Cold stratify for 90 days.
3. Sow seeds 6 mm (1/4") deep in seed-starting soil. Press the soil down gently with your fingers to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Moisten the top layer of soil with water from a spray bottle.
4. Move the planting tray to a spot indoors where it will receive indirect morning sunlight (northwest or northeast facing exposures are best). Check the soil's moisture level once daily. Water with your spray bottle if the soil begins to dry out. It should remain consistently moist at all times.
According to the University of Massachusetts Extension, Schisandra seed germination is naturally erratic. Some seeds may germinate in a few weeks, others may take a month or longer.
