Orchid Primrose (Primula Vialii) 100 seeds (#1458)

Unlike any other primrose! It is beautiful in the border with tall stems which carry 10cm (8in) spikes of contrasting mauve and crimson blooms.
With a unique looking flower spike that doesn't quite belong on a primrose, this primrose shows off red buds that open to violet-pink flowers in a cluster shaped like a rocket. A short-lived perennial native to the moist highland soils of southwestern China, it is easily grown from seeds.
The light-green leaves of this species are held in a rosette, each leaf narrowly oblong, crinkled with veins and hairy. In late spring to midsummer, stiff stems rise from the rosette and form a pointed and tufted cluster of blood-red flower buds at their tops. Once formed, the red buds open from the bottom of the cluster upwards, revealing tiny, dainty, light violet to pink flowers that angle downward.
Grow it in deep, humusy, moist, acidy soils and partial sun to partial shade. In more sun, more moisture is required. Although relatively short-lived, this perennial will reseed itself and perpetuate if the soil is moist and fertile. Grow it as part of a bog garden, in a moist container or in a woodland setting at the edge of a stream, pond or moist depression.
