Oxlip (Primula Elatior mix) 70 seeds (#2149)
About the product
This enchanting perennial is an old English favorite for natural areas and informal gardens. Commonly known as oxlip, it grows in the damp woods and meadows of Europe and Russia, where it has been known to inhabit north-facing mountain slopes as well as low floodplains. In the British Isles it is primarily found in the east.
Oxlip produces a small rosette of narrow, oval corrugated medium green leaves with downy surface hairs. In spring it sends up thick stems topped with drooping clusters of tubular flowers. They are held in clusters of ten to thirty and make lovely, though short-stemmed, cut flowers. The short bloom season lasts only a few weeks, and as the summer heat begins to build oxlip will slip into dormancy.
This primrose has a naturalistic, springtime feel and grows best in sheltered areas with full to partial sun and clay-rich, fertile soil. Grow it as you would any other wild and beautiful spring flower, naturalized in an informal garden setting.
