Vervain (Verbena Rigida Intensity) 50 seeds (#1423)

The pretty and tough, rigid vervain is an everblooming tender perennial with a tall mounding to spreading growth habit. It originates from Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brazil where it can be found growing along open, grassy or rocky uplands. It has naturalized in some regions in the southern United States, so it can become invasive in zones where it is hardy.
The toothed leaves of rigid vervain are dark green to gray green and rough. In fact, they feel a lot like sandpaper when rubbed. Its small, tubular flowers are fragrant and borne in clusters. They may be bright purple, violet or magenta and attract hungry butterflies in the heat of summer. The flowers are followed by dry brown fruits that release lots of seeds that germinate freely. Remove the spent flowers to keep plants from self-sowing and to make way for new flowers.
Plant rigid vervain in a site with full sun and sharply drained, average soil. It grows quickly and should be heavily pruned back in late winter to encourage fresh growth. Powdery mildew is a problem for most Verbena. Good airflow and care will help plants better withstand attacks. This pretty garden flower it well-suited to any sunny garden or containers planting.

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
Sow indoors, January-April, to flower the same year, 0.5cm deep, in trays of compost. Water well and place in a greenhouse or on a warm, kitchen windowsill.
A temperature of +20-25C is ideal. Keep moist.
Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days.
If germination is slow or erratic, place the tray in a refrigerator or outside for 1-2 weeks, then return to the warmth.
Transplant seedlings to 7.5cm pots of compost, when large enough to handle. Always hold by a leaf, never by the stem.
Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into well-drained soil, May-June, 23cm apart, when frosts are over.
