Bistort (Persicaria Bistorta Superba) 10 seeds (#1432)
Bistort is a vigorous perennial with green decorative leaves with prominent white veins and short, dense, pink to white flowerspikes from summer to fall. Native to Europe and northwestern areas of Asia, it is a clump-forming plant that is semi-evergreen depending on severity of winters. The broadly oval, but pointed green leaves have obvious veins that add to the visual interest. Starting in early summer, and sporadically lasting until fall, tall slender stems arise with dense clusters of very pale pink, bell-shaped blossoms that together look like miniature bottlebrushes. The fruits and seeds mature red and will attract small songbirds for a meal.
Bistort excels if planted in consistently moist, well-drained soil in full to partial sun. It is not fond of drier soils, and will have markedly reduced flowering. To encourage reflowering, remove the early season flowers as they mature to seed. In areas with hot summers, the plant may not remain as lush, and therefore may be best used more as a wet-soil or definite shade perennial. The plant will modestly spread via its roots, eventually creating a small colony or broadened clump perfect for a mixed perennial border or in drifts along streams or ponds.
