About the product

European Hop Hornbeam is a close relative of the common Hornbeam and is native to southern Europe. It gets its common name from the seed clusters that hang down like bunches of hops.
A fairly quick growing tree which will reach 15m (50'), upright when young then spreading to become very broad. Both the leaves and the long male catkins which appear in spring are similar to that of a member of the birch family with which it is easily confused. The distinct fruit clusters of nutlets hang almost 5cm (2") long which give the tree its common name.
An easily grown plant, succeeding in most soils, and growing well on chalk. It succeeds in full sun or semi-shade. Plants are hardy to at least -20C. A very ornamental tree, but it is slow to become established. Plants in this genus are notably resistant to honey fungus.

1. Soak the seeds for 24 hours in warm water. Soaking seeds in warm water with a dash of dish soap prior to stratification has helped improve the germination. It is thought that the soap pierces any oily residue on the surface of the seed allowing water to be imbibed.
2. Place the seeds in a handful of just slightly moist sand or vermiculite and then into a plastic ziplock bag. Seal the bag and leave it in the refrigerator for 90-120 days.
3. Sow seeds about 1mm deep in a Well drained seed sowing mix at about +12C.
4. Ostrya seeds will germinate after the stratification done. Sometimes takes a long time, so please be patient.
Normally will only germinate with light, GA-3 may promote germination - even in the dark.
