About the product

What an explosion of color! Bronze-purple leaves and orange flowers make 'Vesuvius' campion a festive addition to the cottage garden. A short-lived perennial, it is a hybrid between Maltese cross (Lychnis chalcedonica) and Haage campion (Lychnis x haageana).
The plant grows as a tufted clump of bronzy purple green leaves that are slightly hairy and lance-shaped. Stems topped with small clusters of flowers of vivid orange appear from early summer to midsummer, each with five, jagged, narrow petals. The bright blooms attract butterflies among other insect pollinators. Somewhat unattractive brown seed pods follow. By late summer the foliage will die back to a small basal clump, so it's important to plant it with other ornamentals that will shine later in the season.
Grow Arkwright's campion in full sun to partial shade and average, well-drained garden soil. Where summers are very hot and humid, plant it where it will receive some shade during the hottest part of the day. Be sure to plant it in a spot with very good drainage and refrain from mulching it heavily as this can discourage spring growth and smother plants. This tidy, compact plant only lives for two to four years and looks nice in rockeries or as an accent in the mixed border. It may self-sow, though seedlings are variable and not necessarily true to parent.
