About the product

The fragile, crinkly blooms of rockrose look like small, delicate, roses, but this tough, shrubby perennial can stand up to considerable heat and drought. In the wild, Helianthemum nummularium is found growing in open meadows and rocky, chalky sites across Europe and Asia Minor. It has a low, spreading habit and fine stems lined with small, fuzzy, gray-green leaves that resist water loss.
Common rockrose blooms from May to July. Its numerous, five-petaled flowers are bright pink, rose, white, red. In the center of each rose-like bloom is a fluffy cluster of bright yellow stamens. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and followed by inconspicuous brown fruits. The plants tend to become leggy after flowering, so it is advisable to gently shear them back in late summer. This will also encourage a second flush of flowers in fall.
Full sun is a must for good health. Rockrose does not fare well in heavy fertile soil but grows best in lean, gritty, alkaline soils. Too much care can kill a plant. Feed rarely and water deeply but not often.
This is a lovely rock garden plant, but it will also fare well in any raised garden or container with excellent soil drainage. Nothing is lovelier than a slope of rockrose in full bloom glowing against the west light of the setting sun.
