-53% Date Plum Persimmon (Diospyros Lotus) 5 seeds (#59)

General aspect and origins - Diospyros lotus, also known as date plum, is a decidious tree that is native to Middle East and South Asia, especially from China and Japan. This tree can reach up to 90 ft (30 m) tall in warm areas, but will generally be smaller. (Up to about 30 ft -10 m- tall) it bears edible small fruits in autumn.
Leaves - Leaves of the date plum are decidious, and are about up to 4-5 in (10 - 12.5 cm) long.
Flowers - Flowers are small and yellow-green, and are dioecious. At least both a male and female plant will be required to get viable seeds.
Fruits - The date plum is a close relative to the persimmon. However, the date plum is a smaller fruit, as it is about 0.75 in (2 cm) wide. It is a globose yellow fruit that turns purple-brown when fully ripe. Like the persimmon, the date plum looses its astringency when fully ripe. The flesh is then very soft and rich in flavour.
Requires a good deep loamy soil in sun or light shade. When being grown for its fruit, the tree should be given a warm, sheltered, sunny position. It dislikes very acid or wet and poorly drained soils. Dormant plants are very cold-hardy, but the young growth in spring, even on mature plants, is frost-tender and so it is best to grow the plants in a position sheltered from the early morning sun. Dioecious, but the female tree can produce seedless fruits in the absence of a pollinator. It is likely that unfertilized fruits are more astringent than fertilized fruits since this is the case with D. kaki. Plants have a long tap root and are difficult to transplant, it is best to plant them out in their permanent position as soon as possible and to give protection overwinter for the first year or two.

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Soak seeds for 24 hours in warm water.
2. Planting persimmon trees from seed takes a bit of time and patience. Germination of persimmon tree seeds requires a period of consistent cold temperature to bring them out of dormancy, which can be accomplished by using a technique called cold stratification. This is done by simply wrapping the seeds in moist paper towels and refrigerating them in a plastic bag or container for three months.
3. Starting your persimmons seeds indoors can be done in late winter or early spring. Be sure to use a deep container for these seeds, as persimmon seedlings develop a very long taproot. The taproot develops long before any growth shows above the soil line and, if your pot isn't deep enough, will push the seed right out of the soil. Place your seeds about two inches below the soil surface, using a well drained potting mixture. Persimmon seeds can take as much as six to eight weeks to germinate, and should be kept moist and warm, between +23-+30C (70-85F), throughout the process.
4. Seedlings should be planted outdoors at the end of their first season of growth, as later transplantation can be damaging to the taproot, which can cause the young tree to wither away. Persimmon trees will grow best in a sunny location that is sheltered from heavy winds, and in soil that provides efficient drainage. Be sure to dig planting holes deep enough to accommodate the taproots comfortably, and tamp soil in around the roots gently, removing any air pockets. Water the seedlings after planting, then keep them moist, but not waterlogged throughout the active growth period.
5. Staking or caging your seedlings is recommended, providing support until their roots have grown enough to give your little trees a firm foothold in the garden. Keep the area around your young persimmon trees clear of weeds, eliminating competition for the nutrients needed to get them off to a healthy start. And, have patience, your persimmon trees will need several years of nurturing before they begin to produce their wonderful fruit. (source: ehow.com)
