Dianthus caryophyllus, carnation or clove pink, is a species of Dianthus. It is probably native to the Mediterranean region but its exact range is unknown due to extensive cultivation for the last 2,000 years.
Great annual flower to grow for cut flowers and bright summer borders with a wide colour range of double and semi-double blooms.
It grows up to 45 cm tall. The leaves are glaucous greyish green to blue-green, slender. The flowers are in pink, white, rose, red, yellow color.
Has edible uses: petals can be used in salads and "crystallised" for decoration.
Grow in pots on the patio to provide late summer color.

Sow indoors from January to March in trays of seed compost.
Sow thinly, cover with a fine layer of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover with glass, clear plastic or propagator lid.
Keep at +20-+25C. Seedlings appear in 14-28 days.
Remove cover then seedlings appear. Grow on at ~+15-+18C.
Transplant when large enough in to 10 cm individual pots. Transplant in to permanent position after the last frost 20 cm apart.
Remove dead flowers to prolong flowering. Keep moist and weed free.
