The use of herbal remedies, including the herb caraway classified as Carum carvi, are popular as an alternative to standard Western allopathic medicine for a variety of problems, including digestion, promoting production of breast milk when breastfeeding as well as to sweeten the breath. Carum carvi is an effective remedy for various ailments, and this natural holistic approach to health is becoming more and more popular, but should NOT replace conventional medicine or prescription drugs. Caraway is also known as Carum carvi, and has certain therapeutic properties and the reported benefits of using it internally, in the form of a herbal tea (infusion) are listed below.
They flower in their second year from the spring to early in the summer.
Carum is known as Caraway and Ajmud. They reach from 0,60-1,20 m in height, and have white flowers and fern like leaves.
The seeds of carum are used in cooking.
Succeeds in ordinary garden soil as long as it is not too wet in winter. Prefers a moist soil in full sun or partial shade.
Tolerates a pH in the range 4.8 to 7.6.
Plants growing in more northerly latitudes and also in full sun are richer in essential oils and therefore more aromatic. Plants strongly resent root disturbance. They often self-sow freely when in a suitable location.
This species is deep rooted and is a good plant for breaking up the sub-soil on heavy, wet land. It dislikes growing near fennel or wormwood but is a good companion for most plants, especially those that are shallow-rooted.
The flowers attract parasitic wasps to the garden, these prey on aphids and so help to reduce populations of insect pests.
