This is a pink-flowered form of common yarrow, a hardy perennial species native to temperate regions throughout the Northern Hemisphere. These plants naturally inhabit open areas and are able to withstand a wide range of growing conditions including poor, sandy or rocky soils. In the garden, common yarrow is a favorite carefree bloomer for sunny flower gardens.
Low basal rosettes of fine, ferny, aromatic foliage anchor this plant throughout the year. The green to gray-green leaves are semi-evergreen and the clumps spread quite vigorously via rhizomes. In early summer it produces many strong leafy floral stems that become covered with broad, flat-topped clusters of diminutive flowers which are typically white, but are rosy pink in the case of this variant. These appear from early to midsummer, and may continue intermittently to early fall if faded flowers are regularly removed.
Common yarrow performs best in full sun and average well-drained soil but will tolerate partial sun to shade and dry soil. It spreads freely in the garden, and may require division every two to three years. This pretty, easy perennial is favored by butterflies and great for mixed beds and borders as well as wildflower gardens.
